Frudes~

What is Frudism?

Artist, D. Mariana Robinson was inspired to create Frudes or Fruity Nudes, whilst studying Picasso's "Pitcher with Apples" (1919) . The art critics of Picasso's time thought his image a little risque for general viewing. Mariana has further developed this idea, coupled with her own wacky sense of humour in the titles, to produce a small collection of Frude paintings, of fruity nudes - thus inventing the word "Frude" and the genre of "Frudism".

The images below have all been painted in watercolour and are only available as Limited Edition Giclee Prints, printed onto A3 watercolour paper and mounted to size 24" x 20". Each image has a limited edition of 250, so now is the time to own a Frude. It is Mariana's intention to produce just TWELVE paintings of this nature to keep the overall theme limited too.

Each Limited Edition print is signed and numbered by the artist and carries an Edition Certificate on the back. It is also embossed stamped for authenticity. Acid-free Mountboard in pale cream and cello wrapped for shipping.

The intention is for the viewer to firstly see a still life of fruit (or vegetables), and only after observing for a few moments, does the nude shape switch into view. They are an image within an image, and the title has a double-entendre. As you can see from the example of "Peachy" below, the grapes are hair, the apple stem is a long eyelash, the cherries are a handbag and the handles of the blue vase suggest hands on hips in a haughty manner. The rounded peach should be obvious!

Fruity~~Description:
The inspiration for Fruity came whilst sitting on a beach on the island of Rarotonga, where plentiful supplies of fruit could be arranged randomly in the sand. The rambutan should be obvious and the half peeled banana represents a stocking top revealing bare flesh.~Fruity|398|~935~938~~
Peachy~~Description:
Peachy was the first Fude I painted. Inspired by Picasso's "Still Life with Pitcher and Apples". I took the image one step further and gave Peachy a more contemporary feel, adding cherries as a handbag and hands on hips pose, suggested by the handles of the vase.~Thailand - Abstract Watercolour|FIT-001|~935~939~MushProducts~
Peeping Toms~~Description:
You can only get a hint of the naughty bits in this painting but the twist on the title is because the tomatoes can see everything from their position. Why just two tomatoes? I'll leave you to ponder that question.~Frude Peeping Toms|FIT-001|~935~958~MushProducts~
Citron Presse~~Description:
Citron Presse was inspired simply by chopping an apple in half! I was amused at the surprised expression created by the pips and folds in the centre of the apple that I spent time thinking how I could incorporate this into a Frude image. The "lemons" are breasts (anagram of melons), the dates are knees, the raspberries on the floor are slippers and I've used grapes for drapes. Living and working in Wales, I decided to have sheep in the landscape beyond the window.~Citron Presse|FIT-001|~935~942~MushProducts~
Granny Smith~~Description:
Granny Smith is my favourite. She's obviously a well-endowed granny, but care was taken to present a perfect still life of apples, from which granny's nude shape emerges. The stocking tops and round-rimmed spectacles were an added bit of fun.~Granny Smith|FIT-001|~935~944~MushProducts~
Stripped Peas Artist~~Description:
Stripped peas artist is a pun on striptease artist. Peas can be viewed in a variety of ways, but a half shelled case looks just like a row of teeth. The red colander contrasts sharply with the green of the peas and the dangling red flower at the end of her "arm" is suggestive of tantilising undressing.~Stripped Peas Artist|FIT-001|~935~945~MushProducts~
Strawberry Tart~~Description:
When viewing Strawberry Tart, you either see three strawberries and a hat in the sand, or your brain switches to reveal a naked shape in the ripples, wearing a red bikini.~Frude - Strawberry Tart|FIT-001|~935~950~MushProducts~
Honey Due~~Description:
Honey Due is an obvious pun on honeydew melon. The yellow roundedness of late pregnancy is emphasized by rather thin rhubarb legs and the sectioned peach allows our subject to smile at her condition. ~Frude - Honey Due|FIT-001|~935~949~MushProducts~
Apricot Fool~~Description:
Apricot Fool has a very nice Mediterranean tan. He is a 21st Century fool because he is sunbathing without protection, and smoking!~Frude Apricot Fool|FIT-001|~935~959~MushProducts~
A Peeling~~Description:
The inspiration for this Frude was accidental, by placing a half peeled apple on a collection of my rough drawings. To the casual viewer there are just two apples with a peeler and plate, but when viewed a little longer, you will see that the apples are breasts relating to the drawing underneath, one of which has been undressed to reveal a nipple.~Frude - A Peeling|FIT-001|~935~952~MushProducts~
Saucy~~Description:
As the name suggests, the rude part of this Frude is in the cherry sauce and carefully arranged whole cherries being poured from a Cornish jug.~Frude - Saucy|FIT-001|~935~956~MushProducts~
Feeling Chilli~~Description:
I wanted to create a play on the word chilli and produce a frude that suggested cold made from such hot, spicy ingredients. Influenced by Picasso again, I chose a simple palette of red, yellow and blue, with a hint of green to give this Frude great impact. You can easily see the frozen subject with crossed legs and arms - with only a scarf to keep out the cold. Can you also see the nose, eye and smile?~Frude - Feeling Chilli|FIT-001|~935~955~MushProducts~
